Excited to show you pictures of the lovely Special Deluxe Collectors Edition of the new Diableries book. Still time for Christmas from the LSC Shop – HERE
DIABLERIES, Stereoscopic Adventures in Hell
We are delighted to be able to offer a limited number of copies of DIABLERIES, Stereoscopic Adventures In Hell, by Brian May, Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming, in a special deluxe collector’s edition. Just 250 of these custom volumes will be published. Bound in Italy in beautiful gold-tooled red vegan faux leather, each one will be signed by the authors and numbered with an individual certificate. With gilt-edged pages and a special ribbon page marker, as well as the updated gold OWL stereoscope included as standard, this will be something absolutely unique for stereo fans and collectors of historical photography to treasure.
We have some people that we’re just beginning to work with who have an app for your iPhone and when you look at one of these pages in the Diableries book the skeletons will come out and dance around. You can go right in and look them right in the eyes, you can go all around.
Amazing – and they’ve managed to bring these skeletons to life, which is another dream, so you might see a Diableries film at some point…

It might have been a grey and showery day in Settle, North Yorkshire, but the weather couldn’t dampen the warmth of the welcome for the Diableries team as they opened their exhibition at the Gallery on the Green – the world’s smallest art gallery. Brian May, Denis Pellerin, and Paula Flemming were there to officially open the Diableries exhibition, which is housed in an old red phone box. Roger Taylor, the curator of the Gallery on the Green, accompanied them.
Sheltering under a large, We Will Rock You 10th Anniversary umbrella, Brian May said a few words before wielding an oversize pair of scissors to cut the tape wrapped around the box.
An eclectic group of stereo photography enthusiasts, Queen fans, and slightly bemused locals, gathered around as Brian demonstrated how to use the golden Owl to view the Diableries stereo cards. All three authors then managed to squeeze into the ex-phone booth gallery, for a photo opportunity.
After spending over half-an-hour chatting with everyone and signing the visitor’s book, Brian, Denis and Paula left the green… as the rain continued to fall.

Don’t miss this opportunity to win the most intriguing photo collection of the year
Brian May is best known for being the guitarist in Queen and for his animal-protection work– but he’s also passionately interested in photography, particularly stereoscopic and 3D imagery. His latest book, written with Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming, is Diableries: it’s a fascinating collection of stereo cards – basically a 3D view printed on paper – with macabre and satirical images of devils and the underworld on them.
Better the devil you know
These cards were fi rst sold in England and France around 1853, and became hugely popular during that decade. Diableries takes you on a dark journey to a fantastic underworld of devils, satyrs and skeletons, and gives a glimpse into the earliest days of 3D photography. And we’ve got three copies to give away!
HOW TO ENTER
We’ve got three copies to give away! Go to www.futurecomps.co.uk/dc145 and fill out the entry form. Diableries, by Brian May, Denis Pellerin and Paula Fleming, is published by The London Stereoscopic Company Ltd. See Events for details of author events.
The Owl is a hoot
Diableries comes with a special stereoscope, designed by Brian May, for viewing the images. The device is called the Owl: it lets you enjoy
these infernally entertaining images as they were originally intended.
The closing date is 6 December 2013, when three entries will be randomly selected from all entries, and the successful entrants notififed. Multiple entries will be disqualified. Only UK residents may enter this competition. Other terms and conditions apply: see the competition web page for details.
Many of you have kindly been asking how the DIABLERIES launch is going.
We’re doing very well so far …. Robin (our London Stereoscopic Company publishing CEO) pressed the button on the first reprint last week – even before the launch date. That must be some kind of record !
It’s a juggling act with the numbers – how many to order ? You can never be sure, of course, if you will run out of books at a critical moment, or be left with thousands mouldering in a warehouse. And in this case, we have to be prepared with enough OWLS, which in turn means being prepared with enough pairs of lenses … not a simple operation. Also, the slip cases are made in China and the books printed in Italy ! So it’s – as Ms Ellis would say – all fun and games !
This week the book jumped up thousands (!) of places in the Amazon overall chart, ending up at number … erm …. 112
Amazon Bestsellers Rank: 112 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)
#2 in Books > Art, Architecture & Photography
And in the Art and Photography books list, it jumped to number 2 ! So thanks, very much, guys !!!
Cheers
Bri
PS The second printing (with a couple of corrections) will materialise at the end of November, if all goes well.
These are nice stereoscopic mementos from our British Library launch of the DIABLERIES into the 21st century. Captured by Claudia Manzoni …

Brian Talks Diableries with Alan Titchmarsh.
The Alan Titchmarsh Show aired 31st October 2013 – http://youtu.be/7tjFCIA6Ges
At 2pm on November 6th Brian May will unveil an exhibition of stereoscopic 3D photographs that will allow visitors to the Gallery on the Green, Settle, to take a trip to the imaginary world of hell and the underworld. These photographs belong to a series created in France during the 1850s and known as the Diableries. These carefully crafted theatrical tableaux reveal a fantasy world of skeletons, devils, debauchery, that delight the eye and hold the attention of the viewer.
The exhibition is being opened to coincide with the publication of the lavishly illustrated book Diableries which reveals the historical and cultural context of this extraordinary group of images. For Brian May, and his fellow authors, Denis Pellerin, and Paula Fleming, “It has been a labour of love for us all, and has taken us to places we never dreamed of. We hope, in these pages, to share this voyage of discovery with you.”
For those who cannot make the opening there will be a stereoscopically illustrated lecture and book signing at the Victoria Hall, Settle at 7:30pm when the authors will reveal the mysteries and delights of these ghoulishly fantastical, photographs!!
